A comfortable first wearable

A scarf gives you plenty of room to settle into a stitch without complicated shaping. This version uses half double crochet worked back and forth. Choose a yarn that feels pleasant against your neck, and let the finished length suit the way you like to wear a scarf.

Gather your materials

Set aside approximately 400 meters of medium-weight yarn, a 5.5 mm hook as a starting point, scissors, a yarn needle, two stitch markers, and a tape measure. Your yarn choice, tension, and final dimensions will affect how much yarn you need; keep the yarn label so you can obtain more of the same yarn if necessary.

Abbreviations: ch means chain; hdc means half double crochet; st means stitch. This pattern uses US terms. Work under both top loops unless told otherwise. The two turning chains do not count as a stitch anywhere in this pattern.

Check the width first

The scarf begins with 24 stitches across. Make several rows and measure the fabric before committing to the whole project. If you prefer a different width, restart with your chosen number of stitches plus two chains. The repeat works with any positive number of stitches. A softer fabric may need a larger hook; an excessively loose fabric may need a smaller one.

Work the scarf

1. Chain 26.
2. Row 1: Work one hdc into the third chain from the hook, then one hdc into every remaining chain. Count 24 hdc.
3. Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. Work one hdc into the first stitch and every stitch across. Do not work into the turning chain. Count 24 hdc.
4. Repeat Row 2 until the scarf reaches your preferred length. About 150 centimeters is a useful starting point for an adult scarf; adjust it to your preference and available yarn.

Move a marker into the first and last stitch of each new row. If a row has 23 or 25 stitches, correct it immediately instead of trying to hide the difference later.

Finish gently

Cut the yarn with a generous tail, draw the tail through the final loop, and weave it securely through the fabric in more than one direction. Weave in the starting tail as well. Wash and dry according to your yarn label, laying the scarf into shape without stretching it.

Wear it, notice what you enjoy about the fabric, and save those observations for your next scarf. Changing one feature—color, width, or length—makes the same simple repeat feel entirely new.
